The Butterfly Tree

Ten-year-old Emma, who lives in the lakeside village of Silver Bay, befriends and helps a magnificent tundra swan to escape entanglement in an old fishing line. The swan, a king among his kind, promises to be available whenever Emma should call. Later, Sam, an embittered local businessman, proposes to cut down the beautiful and much-treasured butterfly tree, which has stood in the village for hundreds of years and upon which butterflies rest during their annual migration. Many people are horrified, but the swan king responds to Emma's call with his followers, and their music through the night magically transforms the situation. No longer bitter, Sam joins in conserving the tree and happily permits Emma's brother and Sam's daughter to marry, amid community rejoicing.
